UCAS

Cynffig Comprehensive is an 11 to 18 mixed English medium comprehensive school that is
maintained by Bridgend local authority. It serves the North Cornelly, Pyle, Kenfig Hill and
Cefn Cribwr wards. The school currently has 774 pupils and around 25% of those pupils are
eligible for free school meals, which is above the national average. More than 20% of our
pupils live in the 20% most deprived areas of Wales. The 2017 Estyn Inspection judged the
school as adequate and needs improvement in 4 out of the 5 inspection areas. The Post
Inspection Action Plan is being implemented to rectify these shortcomings.
A high proportion of Cynffig pupils choose to stay on after Year 11 and join our Sixth Form.
The numbers currently stand at around 80 learners. The Key Stage 5 curriculum is solely
based on Level 3 courses, usually through traditional A Levels assessed by the WJEC. All
students follow the Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate; for many this is their 3 rd
Level 3 qualification. Some pupils follow this as their 4 th subject to develop the vital skills
that they are going to require for their future career pathways.
In addition to our in-house provision, we collaborate with a number of other schools and
with Bridgend College to offer the broadest possible spectrum of choice to support our
pupils’ needs, and at these institutions, subjects such as Law, Forensics and Music
Technology are on offer.
Cynffig has a tradition of having an esteemed Senior Prefect Team and posts are fulfilled via
written application form and a face to face interview in front of a panel. This not only
provides the pupils with valuable wider experiences but also are of enormous benefit to the
school as a whole supporting extra curricular events such as parents evenings, primary
transition events as well as fundraising activities and representing the school in the local
community.
Thank you for taking the time to read this background information in support of our UCAS
